The day
They said their vows on the lawn under the willows with the lake behind them, then walked back up the aisle with both hands in the air to a crowd that was already on its feet.
The light
The light did most of the arguing for me that day. Willow shade through the ceremony broke up the hard overhead sun without any diffusion of my own. Then the sunset came straight across the water and turned the last of the portraits into silhouettes. May on the lakeshore does not always cooperate like that.
The venue
Spring Lake Country Club is one of the few West Michigan venues where the lake is the backdrop of the ceremony itself, not a view through a window. Because the water sits behind the couple, the recessional walks straight toward the camera with the lake in every frame. Water, willows, a golf course, and a ballroom all sit within a five-minute walk, so the film gets variety without spending the timeline on travel.
